The Difference Between Mizuma Black Pines and Others 🌲✨

At Otsu Shorakuen, we have been cultivating Mizuma Black Pines for generations in the Mizuma area of Kurume.

One of their defining features is the twice-a-year pruning—in winter (Nov–Dec) and early summer (June–mid July). This careful process helps the buds tighten and gives the trees the calm, refined shape characteristic of the Mizuma style. In contrast, many other black pines are pruned once a year, resulting in a different rhythm of care and overall appearance.

Mizuma also has a long tradition of gently shaping branches to create a softly drooping form, inspired by the natural beauty of old pine trees.

This subtle technique gives Mizuma black pines their unique atmosphere, and we continue to pass it on to younger craftsmen as part of our local heritage.

We will keep honoring this tradition as we grow and share beautiful black pines with customers around the world.
